Śrī Brahma-saṁhitā — The Hymn of the Creator

With commentaries by Śrī Jīva Gosvāmī and Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura
The Brahma-saṁhitā, Brahmā’s hymn in praise of Govinda, holds a unique place in the sacred literature of the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava tradition. At the dawn of creation, Brahmā appeared from the lotus rising from the navel of Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu. Confused and seeking to understand his purpose and the source of everything, he received divine instruction, performed austerity and meditation, and at last attained direct vision of Govinda in His transcendental form, whereupon he offered the prayers of glorification preserved in the Brahma-saṁhitā. Thus, the text is not merely a philosophical treatise but a record of divine revelation born of devotional realization.
Although only the Fifth Chapter is now extant, its sixty-two verses contain a philosophical and poetic vision of extraordinary depth: the nature of the Absolute Truth, the origin of all worlds, the mystery of divine beauty, the spiritual realm of Goloka, and the eternal form of Śrī Kṛṣṇa as Govinda, the primeval Lord and cause of all causes. During His travels in South India, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu discovered a manuscript of this chapter at the Ādi-keśava temple and recognized its immense importance. From that time onward, it became treasured among Vaiṣṇavas as a concise yet profound expression of the deepest philosophical conclusions.
Two important commentaries accompany the verses in this new edition: Jīva Gosvāmī’s Dig-darśinī-ṭīkā, written in the 16th Century, which reveals the philosophical structure underlying the text, and Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura’s Brahma-saṁhitā-prakāśinī, published in 1897, which builds upon Jīva Gosvāmī’s explanations and provides further illumination.
This edition offers fresh English translations of both commentaries from the original Sanskrit and Bengali, word-for-word synonyms, and editorial annotations. Throughout, the original texts remain the final authority, and translation is kept clearly distinct from explanation. Interpretative expansion is placed in footnotes and annotations, allowing the reader to see both what the original says and how it has been understood.
The book is also conceived as a visual presentation of the Brahma-saṁhitā. Original color illustrations accompany the verses, giving visual form to their descriptions of creation, the manifestations of the Divine, Goloka, and the beauty and pastimes of Govinda.
In the Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta (Madhya 9.239–240), it is stated:
“There is no scripture equal to the Brahma-saṁhitā as far as the final spiritual conclusion is concerned. Indeed, that scripture is the supreme revelation of the glories of Lord Govinda, for it reveals the topmost knowledge about Him. Since all conclusions are briefly presented in the Brahma-saṁhitā, it is essential among all the Vaiṣṇava literatures.”
Translation and annotations by Bhakti Gauravani Goswami. First edition, September 2026.
